The Nakba - the Palestinian catastrophe of being forced from their homeland - continues unabated in 2022.

In early May, the Israeli High Court approved the forced eviction of a collection of Palestinian communities in the Masafer Yatta area, in the south of the West Bank.
In effect, the court approved a war crime.

If this crime is carried out, it will be the largest forcible transfer of Palestinians from their land since 1967, when the Israeli military took over the West Bank and Gaza.
These expulsions and demolitions can happen at any time, with no notice.

Indeed, they have begun already! Demolitions and horrific displacement are underway now. In May and June, Israeli soldiers came to Masafer Yatta with bulldozers. They forced Palestinians out and destroyed their homes in front of their eyes.

We know that over 1,200 Palestinians, including 500 children, are threatened with the destruction of their homes and communities. And that number may be more than double. We have received word that there are neighboring communities Israel may be targeting also, bringing the number to 2800 or more men, women and children in danger of losing their homes and communities.

The U.S. Congress and the Biden administration have power to pressure Israel and prevent this. But they will only take action if we demand it.

As your constituent, I'm writing to ask you to urge the Biden administration to use diplomatic action and accountability measures in US law to stop the forced displacement of over 1200 Palestinians from their homes in Masafer Yatta.

If the Israeli government’s plans are allowed to proceed, this would be the single largest forced displacement of Palestinians since 1967.

On May 4th, 2022, the Israeli High Court issued its final decision and ending decades of legal struggles for these communities to be able to stay on the land where they have lived for generations. The court gave the army the green light to force hundreds of families out of their homes. This can happen at a moment’s notice.

Israel has already begun the mass expulsions, making 45 Palestinians homeless on May 11th, ahead of Biden’s planned visit in July. As The Washington Post recently wrote, “Human rights activists, both Palestinian and Israeli, contend that the real purpose of many of the firing zones has been to clear away Arab [Palestinian] residents and strengthen Israel’s grip on more occupied Palestinian territory.”

These threatened displacements in Masafer Yatta are part of an ongoing Israeli policy that forces Palestinians from their homes by confiscating property, denying building permits, and destroying homes. Between January 1 and May 2, 2022, at least 204 Palestinian structures were destroyed by Israel, displacing 247 Palestinians and impacting over 1,150 others.

As a person of conscience who cares deeply about human rights, I am concerned that these demolitions and forced displacement cause incredible suffering for Palestinians and undermine the prospects of a just and lasting peace for all.

I ask that you speak out against these threatened evictions in the West Bank and that you urge the Biden Administration to take action to end Israel’s forced displacement of Palestinian families.

The U.S. must demand accountability for Israeli violations of Palestinian rights, or these abuses will continue and increase. Your action is needed to bring change. Thank you for your immediate action on this vital human rights matter.
