As the violence and loss of life in the Holy Land unfolds before us, people of faith and all people of conscience must do what we can to reverse the course that Israel and the United States are following.
The Israeli military is making good on its promise to “open the gates of hell” on the 2.2 million Palestinians trapped under the Israeli siege of Gaza.
The casualties are terrifying. With over 14,000 killed in this short time, more than two-thirds of the dead are civilians, including roughly 6,000 children. Most hospitals are under attack, and very little medical aid remains. People are also starving and freezing. Over 45% of all homes in Gaza are destroyed, and 1.5 million people have been displaced, with no safe haven to be found anywhere. Those who evacuated northern Gaza as Israel demanded are being bombed in the southern part of Gaza.
The United States should be offering solutions that promote life, justice, and peace. Instead U.S. leaders have declared their readiness to support and strengthen this terrifying vengeance with weapons, military advisors, and naval support.
Israel's horrific assault on Gaza must not be encouraged, it must end. The U.S. must not fund what credible observers are describing as genocide.
It should be clear to all that Israel is not heeding U.S. calls to abide by international humanitarian law that prioritizes the protection of civilians.
How can any responsible government leader that claims to support human rights consider funding the continuation and expansion of terrifying crimes against humanity?
At the United Nations in October, most of the world voted AGAINST the Israeli genocide and the forced displacement of the people of Gaza, and FOR a ceasefire and desperately needed humanitarian aid for Gaza.
In the United States, millions of citizens have been voting with their feet and their voices and their keyboards for those very same things.
Now there are dozens in Congress calling for ceasefire also.
We must keep raising our voices in every way we can, until U.S. leaders listen.
Deeply disturbing also is the rampant violence and ethnic cleansing by Israeli settlers and soldiers in the West Bank and the cruel lockdown imposed on millions of Palestinians there. U.S. leaders should address those conditions as well, calling for the protection for all Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and an end to the punishing lockdown they are living under now.
Regarding the prisoners held by Hamas, when calling for their release, that call should include Israel's political prisoners, especially children, and including all those held under "administrative detention" by Israel without charge or trial.
This is a time of moral reckoning for the world. We must do all we can to convince the U.S. government to change course and help to stop the destruction of Gaza.
We know there is only one way to end this violence in the long-term, by addressing the root causes of what is happening today: 75 years of Israeli ethnic cleansing, military occupation, and apartheid.
But in this crucial moment we need to unite in calling for the most immediate and urgent needs.
Tell the U.S. Congress and President Biden:
OPPOSE Israeli genocide.
DEMAND an immediate ceasefire AND ample humanitarian aid for Gaza, with restoration of electricity and water.
CALL for the release of political captives - especially children - held by both Israel and Hamas, AND protection for Palestinians in the West Bank.
