As we see the horrifying destruction and loss of life in Palestine/Israel unfolding - the first live-streamed genocide in history - people of faith and all people of conscience must do what we can to end this nightmare, to reverse the course that Israel and the United States are following.
For over a year and a half, Israel has been making good on its promise to “open the gates of hell” on the 2.2 million Palestinians trapped under the Israeli siege of Gaza.
The reports are ghastly:
At least 50,000, possibly over 70,000 have been killed directly by this genocidal assault, including over 15,000 children.
Analysts have estimated that 80% of the casualties are civilians.
That is not collateral damage or accidental. That is deliberate annihilation of the civilian population.
Most hospitals have been targeted and destroyed by Israel, and medical care of any kind is collapsing.
A million or more are without homes, with no safe haven in this small piece of land where they are imprisoned. They cannot even flee the terror as refugees, being locked inside Gaza.
Terrified families are ordered to move from one area to another, again and again, and when they manage to do that, they are bombed in those areas they were told would be safe.
The numbers of medical professionals, humanitarian aid workers, and journalists that have been targeted and killed by Israel has shocked even the most hardened observers of war.
No wonder the International Criminal Court found that there was a reasonable basis to believe genocide was being committee by Israel in Gaza, and they took up that charge brought by South Africa.
In both the Biden and Trump administrations, the U.S. government has been wholeheartedly supporting and arming Israel, enabling it to continue this horror show.
How can government leaders who claim to believe in human rights endorse these terrifying crimes against humanity? The United States should be offering solutions that promote life, justice, and peace.
Millions in the U.S. and around the world have been demanding that world leaders stop this nightmare and help save the people of Gaza.
Citizens of the U.S. and the world demand a permanent ceasefire and humanitarian aid flowing freely to the people of Gaza. We reject any plan to ethnically cleanse Gaza of Palestinians.
May 2024 update – Those in the U.S. can support a new resolution in the Senate, S. Res 224, which calls for lifting the blockade of Gaza, securing the release of hostages and working for a durable end to this war.
We must keep raising our voices in every way we can, no matter how weary we may become of doing that. Our weariness cannot compare to the suffering and despair in Gaza.
--------
Of great concern also is the rampant violence by Israeli settlers and soldiers in the West Bank. Hundreds are dead and over 40,000 people have been displaced. Communities large and small are being completely destroyed. Seeing the impunity Israel has had for genocide in Gaza, Israeli settlers, soldiers, and their government have been emboldened to vastly more extreme policies and attacks in the West Bank.
We must demand the protection of Palestinian civilians in the West Bank as well and reject the ethnic cleansing of this occupied Palestinian territory.
---------
This is a time of moral reckoning for the world.
We must continue to do all we can to stop the hideous destruction in Gaza as well as the rising violence in the West Bank.
In the long term, we know there is only one way to end this: by addressing the root causes of what is happening today - 76 years of Israeli ethnic cleansing, military occupation, and apartheid.
But in this crucial moment we unite in calling for the most immediate and urgent needs.
Tell the U.S. Congress and President Biden we demand:
• Ample humanitarian aid for Gaza, with restoration of electricity and water.
• The release of political captives held by both Israel and Hamas.
• A permanent ceasefire in Gaza
• No more U.S. weapons to Israel!
